Would Rather
Esprime una preferenza personale. Nel parlato di tutti i giorni, la forma di gran lunga più comune è «I’d rather + base verb», usata quando parli di ciò che TU vuoi fare: «I’d rather stay home.» «I’d rather not talk about it.» «I’d rather cry than laugh.» Per preferire ciò che fa QUALCUN ALTRO, l’inglese passa a «I’d rather + subject + past simple»: «I’d rather you didn’t smoke.» «She’d rather we left now.» Questa seconda forma è più rara nella conversazione senza copione e ha un tono leggermente più formale o indiretto.
