Grammatica dell’inglese

Desideri e ipotesi

I wish + past simple (for a present situation)

«I wish I were taller.» «I wish she knew the answer.» Nell’inglese parlato di tutti i giorni, «I wish I was» è comune quanto «I wish I were», ed entrambe le forme sono accettate, ma i libri di testo insegnano solo la forma formale «were».

I Wish - Rimpianti al passato

I wish + past perfect (for a past situation)

«I wish I had studied harder.» «I wish they hadn’t left so early.» «He wishes he’d told her the truth.»

Would Rather

I’d rather + base verb (same subject), or I’d rather + subject + past simple (different subject)

«I’d rather not talk about it.» «I’d rather cry than laugh.» Per preferire ciò che fa QUALCUN ALTRO, l’inglese passa a «I’d rather + subject + past simple»: «I’d rather you didn’t smoke.» «She’d rather we left now.»

Suppose / Imagine

Suppose / Imagine + past simple (for hypothetical framing)

Invita qualcuno a considerare una situazione ipotetica. Usa forme al passato come i periodi ipotetici. «Suppose you won the lottery, what would you do?» «Imagine she found out.» «Supposing he didn’t come?»
