What does “ahorita” actually mean in Spanish?

Ahorita looks like a simple diminutive of ahora (“now”), but across Latin America it has drifted loose from any fixed meaning. In this clip, the sister twice promises ahorita juego contigo (“I’ll play with you ahorita”) while clearly stalling — and that vagueness is the whole point. Depending on the country, tone, and how badly someone wants to avoid committing, ahorita can mean seconds from now, hours from now, or never.

In Mexico, ahora can mean “later” while ahoritita means “right now” — the opposite of what a learner expects. In Colombia and Venezuela, ahorita usually leans toward “in a little while,” softer than a flat no but noncommittal enough to buy time, exactly as it works here between siblings. There is no universal rule; the only safe strategy is reading the speaker’s tone, not the word itself.
