Cosa significa “จาน (jaan)” in thailandese?
In MasterChef Thailand, il premio che gli chef inseguono è จานที่ดีที่สุด, “il miglior จาน.” Un จาน (jaan) è letteralmente un piatto, ma il thailandese lo estende a indicare un’intera “portata” o pietanza, proprio come l’inglese “a great dish.” Quindi จานที่ดีที่สุด significa insieme “il miglior piatto” e “la miglior portata.”
จาน è anche un classificatore, la parolina di conteggio che il thailandese mette dopo un numero: ข้าวสองจาน (khâao sǎawng jaan) vuol dire “due piatti di riso.” In thailandese quasi tutto si conta con questi contatori, e il cibo si conta solitamente per il suo contenitore: จาน per i piatti piani e ชาม (chaam) per le ciotole. Imparando จาน puoi sia fare un complimento a uno chef sia ordinare una seconda porzione.
